Liverpool Close in on Florian Wirtz as £42m Deal Nears Completion: Arne Slot’s Transfer Revolution Underway

Liverpool are wasting no time in reshaping their squad under new head coach Arne Slot, with the Merseyside giants now closing in on one of the biggest transfers in Europe this summer. According to James Pearce, there is a strong sense of “expectation” that the Reds and Bayer Leverkusen will soon finalize an agreement for highly-rated German playmaker Florian Wirtz—a move that has the potential to be a game-changer at Anfield.

The 22-year-old attacking midfielder, hailed as one of Europe’s brightest young talents, has already seen two bids from Liverpool rejected. However, with Fenway Sports Group (FSG) reportedly giving the green light to raise their offer, a “historic transfer” looks increasingly likely to materialize in the coming days.

Wirtz, who played a pivotal role in Bayer Leverkusen’s Bundesliga triumph last season, recorded 12 goals and 18 assists across all competitions, making him a standout performer in Xabi Alonso’s title-winning squad. His creativity, vision, and composure in tight spaces have drawn comparisons to legends like Mesut Özil and Kai Havertz—only with even more dynamism.

But Wirtz isn’t the only marquee addition expected at Anfield this summer.

Liverpool are also believed to be in the “final steps” of sealing a £42 million deal for an unnamed target—widely rumoured to be Milos Kerkez, the versatile left-back from Bournemouth. This deal, which could be announced before the Wirtz saga concludes, reflects Arne Slot’s aggressive approach to revamping the team.

Earlier, the Reds confirmed the acquisition of Jeremie Frimpong, another Leverkusen star, who is expected to provide direct competition—or possibly an alternative role—for Trent Alexander-Arnold, whose future may see a permanent shift into midfield.

Arne Slot’s ambition is crystal clear: build a dynastic squad capable of dominating both domestically and in Europe, and these early moves suggest Liverpool are well on track. With a significant war chest at his disposal and FSG seemingly more willing to spend big this summer, Slot has the backing to turn vision into reality.
