Chelsea’s Champions League return is already shaping the club’s summer transfer strategy—and the message is clear: goals are the priority.
Earlier this week, Chelsea completed the £30 million signing of Liam Delap from Ipswich Town. The 21- year-old striker, who netted 18 goals and provided 7 assists in the Championship last season, snubbed a late push from Manchester United to join the Blues. His medical was completed on Monday, and the official unveiling has energized Chelsea’s fanbase.
> “This is a huge step in my career,” Delap said during his first interview. “Playing Champions League football for a club like Chelsea is something you dream about as a kid. I’m ready to fight for my place and make an impact.”
Delap’s arrival, however, is only part of the picture. According to multiple sources, Chelsea are actively exploring a deal for Eintracht Frankfurt forward Hugo Ekitike. The 22-year-old Frenchman—who scored 11 goals in all competitions during his loan spell from PSG before making the move permanent—has been monitored by Chelsea scouts since January.
Ekitike by the Numbers:
Appearances (2024/25): 29
Goals: 11
Assists: 5
Shot accuracy: 61%
Successful dribbles per game: 2.1
Ekitike, known for his quick feet, composure in tight spaces, and intelligent movement, could offer a dynamic counterbalance to Delap’s physical style.
> “I’ve always admired the Premier League’s intensity,” Ekitike told L’Equipe earlier this year. “If the right opportunity comes, I’ll be ready. But right now, my focus is on finishing the season strong with Frankfurt.”
Chelsea are reportedly weighing up a move in the region of £70–£84 million, though much will depend on Frankfurt’s stance and the player’s own preferences.
With Christopher Nkunku and Nicolas Jackson already in the squad, some fans have questioned whether Chelsea need another striker. But insiders point to the club’s desire for tactical flexibility and competition—especially with European football returning.
Speculative Chelsea Lineup (4–2–3–1) Including Ekitike and Delap:
Maignan
Gusto Disasi Colwill Cucurella
Caicedo Enzo
Madueke Nkunku Ekitike
Delap
This setup allows Nkunku to operate centrally behind Delap, while Ekitike drifts in from the left—much like his role at Frankfurt. Alternatively, the Frenchman could partner Delap in a 4–4–2 or rotate depending on the opponent.
Whether or not the Ekitike deal materializes, Chelsea’s summer intent is already clear. After years of rebuilding, the Blues look ready to compete not just in England, but on the European stage once again.
