Virginia Tech Women’s Basketball Earns No. 1 Seed in WBIT After NCAA Tournament Snub.Despite falling short of an NCAA Tournament bid, the Virginia Tech Hokies women’s basketball team has earned a No. 1 seed in the inaugural Women’s Basketball Invitation Tournament (WBIT). The team, which finished the season with an 18-12 record, is set to face North Carolina A&T in the first round of the tournament.

Virginia Tech was considered a bubble team for the NCAA Tournament but ultimately missed out due to an inconsistent season that included key injuries and tough losses in Atlantic Coast Conference (ACC) play. However, the Hokies remain one of the strongest teams in the WBIT field and will aim to make a deep run in the tournament.

The WBIT was introduced in 2025 as a secondary postseason tournament for women’s college basketball, similar to the former WNIT (Women’s National Invitation Tournament). The event gives teams that narrowly missed the NCAA Tournament an opportunity to compete at a high level and extend their seasons.Head coach Kenny Brooks expressed optimism about the team’s chances in the WBIT, stating,

“Of course, our goal was to make the NCAA Tournament, but we’re grateful for the opportunity to continue competing. We have a talented group, and we’re going to make the most of this experience.”

Virginia Tech’s first-round matchup against North Carolina A&T is expected to take place later this week. The Hokies will look to prove they belonged in the NCAA Tournament by making a statement in the WBIT.
